Sask. farmers welcome review of the Canada Grain Act

Saskatchewan farmers welcome Ottawa’s review of the Canada Grain act.

Federal agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau says the act hasn’t changed in almost 50 years and marketing has changed.

Western Canadian Wheat Growers committee chair Jim Wickett says changes are needed to services from the Canadian Grain Commission and grain grading.

He says the current visual grading system is out of date.

He also wants some services from the grain commission streamlined.

He says more grains need to be included under the bonding provisions which ensure farmers get paid when a grain company goes bankrupt.

The federal consultations will be on-line until April 30th.
