Former trucker responsible for Humboldt Broncos bus crash trying to avoid deportation

The man responsible for the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash in April of 2018 is fighting to stay in Canada.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu has submitted papers with reasons why he feels he should not be deported back to India.

Sidhu is now waiting for the Canada Border Services Agency to write a report that will recommend whether he be allowed to stay in Canada or be deported.

Sidhu is currently serving an eight year sentence after pleading guilty to 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 more counts causing injury.

On that day the then 30-year-old truck driver blew through a stop sign and directly into the path of the Broncos bus, which was on its way to a playoff game in Nipawin.

A criminal conviction that carries a sentence of at least six months means any permanent resident is ineligible to remain in the country.

The Immigration and Refugee Board then holds a hearing to consider the report, and is responsible for issuing any deportation order.
