Impaired driving was SGI’s traffic safety focus for December, and police across the province reported 369 offences.
SGI’s Tyler McMurchy says that number is up from past months where distracted driving was the spotlight.
“We saw in 2019 295 impaired driving offences and in 2018 we saw 352,” McMurchy said. “This does cap off a year where we did see the number of impaired driving offences, on average, go up over the previous year.”
McMurchy says the number of people caught in the other “big three” offences were down.
“All three of those offences — whether it comes to speeding, distracted driving or seatbelt or car-seat infractions — they were all among the lowest numbers we’ve seen all year.”
414 people were caught for distracted driving, 207 for improper seat restraints, and 34 hundred for speeding or aggressive driving.
