APAS is hopeful farm use of natural gas and propane will be exempt from federal carbon tax

APAS president Todd Lewis is encouraged with movement in Ottawa to exempt farm use of natural gas and propane from the federal carbon tax.

A private members bill from the Conservatives passed second reading in the house of Commons this week, designed to exempt farm use of natural gas and propane from the carbon tax.

The bill now goes to committee before back to the Commons for third and final reading.

Lewis says the only opposition came from the minority Liberals, and they are talking about some form of farm rebate for the carbon tax on grain drying.

He is encouraged by the movement and hoping for an exemption.

Lewis says the rising carbon tax is expected to cost wheat producers 4 dollars 44 cents an acre by 2030.
