Province says time has come to get ice fishing shacks off the lake

A message for those who have spent part of their winter on a Saskatchewan lake doing some ice fishing.

The province says all ice fishing shelters south of Highway 16 must be removed by March 15 with those north of Highway 15 having to remove their shelter by the end of the month.

The environment ministry says each year, shelters are abandoned and when the ice melts. it can pose a danger to those using the lake in the summer.

Structures must be moved to a location where they can be loaded and transported to the owner’s residence or property. Litter must also be removed when ice shelters are removed from the ice.
If shelters are not removed, owners may be prosecuted and the structure and contents may be moved off the ice and confiscated.

Those needing to remove their shack are reminded to take extreme caution as the weather warms meaning the thickness of the ice will be eroding.
