Sask. hog producers anticipate re-opening of Red Deer pork plant

Saskatchewan hog producers are hoping for a quick re-opening of the Olymel hog plant in Red Deer, Alberta.

The plant shut-down over two weeks ago after a COVID-19 outbreak.

SaskPork general manager Mark Ferguson says the plant was inspected Monday and is expected to re-open late this week on a gradual basis.

Ferguson says the plant processes about half of Saskatchewan’s hogs and producers are running out of barn space.

He says some producers shipped hogs to the U.S. but transportation is costly.
