RPS issue charges after RCC inmate escapes custody

We are getting a little more information from the Regina Police Service on a Wednesday afternoon incident that saw a prisoner at the Regina Correctional Centre escape custody while on an escorted medical leave.

Around 2:30 p.m, Police were called to the 1600 block of Albert Street, just south of Dewdney, after two correctional officers were allegedly assaulted with a woman then being robbed of her vehicle.  The two male officers were taken to hospital with what is being called “significant” injuries while the woman was not harmed, but extremely upset over what had happened.

The suspect made his way northeast out of the city and made its way north and east on grid roads before the driver eventually put the car in the ditch.  He was taken into custody after being safely negotiated of the vehicle about two hours after the incident began.

31-year-old Michael Obey faces two charges of aggravated assault against a peace officer, robbery and escaping lawful custody.  Obey was in court on Thursday.
