The Saskatoon Fire Department says one person is dead after a fire in an apartment building on Broadway Avenue.

The call came in around 7 Saturday night as someone reported seeing smoke on the ground floor of the three-storey building.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke in a first-floor suite and an unresponsive person.

The cause is accidental with a fire investigator saying the cause seemed to originate in the kitchen behind the fridge.

Damage is estimated at about $120,000.

The name of the victim has not been released.
