Regina City Council will vote at Wednesday’s meeting on what to do with a statue of Canada’s first prime minister located in Victoria Park.
City administration is recommending the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald be put into storage while “consultations occur with partners and the public on an appropriate future location” along with the introduction of “balanced educational programming and narrative.”
A second recommendation asks city administrators to report to council in the first quarter of 2022, with community engagement results to “determine the final location of the statue.”
The City started what it calls the legacy review last July, acknowledging the first Canadian prime minister’s “harmful legacy” towards Indigenous people and his involvement in the residential schools program.
It’s estimated updated education, removal and relocation of the statue, would cost the City between $25,000 and $35,000.
The statue, part of Regina’s Civic Art Collection, was built in 1967.
