FCC sees major opportunity for growth for Indigenous agriculture

Regina based Farm Credit Canada says there is a major opportunity for expansion of indigenous agriculture.

The director of FCC Indigenous relations, Shaun Soonias, says there is growth opportunity in many types of farming, from ranching and cropping to indigenous herbs and medicines.

For example, he says one company in Northern Saskatchewan is exporting products to Europe for make up and gum markets.

Soonias, says an FCC survey found more than 70 percent of indigenous producers plan to expand over the next five years, despite some difficulties.

Soonias says FCC wants to improve training and access to capital for indigenous communities to expand agriculture production.
