The Regina chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters is celebrating 50 years in the community.
The organization offers mentorship programs for youth, through both in-school and community-based programs.
Regional Director Amy Noureldin says looking back at the past 50 years, they are proud of the relationships they’ve helped create.
“This year is all about celebrating that, and showcasing our mentoring programs, and their effectiveness in the community,” said Noureldin. “And looking forward to the next 50 years.”
Even though their anniversary was Wednesday, Big Brothers Big Sisters is celebrating all year long.
Noureldin says the festivities will focus on remembering the past, as well as looking forward to the future, adding there are some fun things planned.
“We have an alumni campaign, where each month, we’re featuring alumni from the past 50 years,” said Noureldin. “We’re doing 50 facts for 50 years until December, every couple weeks, we’re doing a new fact, and we’ll do some trivia prizes from local businesses to keep people engaged.”
If there’s anything they’ve learned over the past half-century, Noureldin says it’s that there are never enough mentors.
“There’s always kids that need a mentor,” said Noureldin. “I think over the last 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters, nationally, has come a long way in that the organization was started to really focus on young men that didn’t have father figures in their life. We’ve certainly come a long way in recognizing that everybody needs a mentor.”
