This week’s snow will improve dry soil moisture conditions in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan crop specialists are saying this week’s moisture is welcome but more is needed.

The weather office says much of the grainbelt had five to ten centimeters of snow Monday, except Wynyard, which received over 18 centimeters.

More snowfall is also forecasted for Tuesday.

Provincial crop extension specialist Matt Struthers sees a small benefit from the snowfall.

Struthers says timely rains will be necessary during the growing season to ensure a good crop.

University of Saskatchewan soil science professor Les Henry says crops will need more moisture this growing season due to low subsoil moisture.

Henry says warm dry weekend weather further dried out the soil so this weeks moisture is important for spring seeding, which is expected to start in a few weeks.
