COVID-19 outbreak at Regina Correctional Centre is growing

The outbreak of COVID-19 at the Regina jail has reportedly almost doubled in size.

The SGEU says numbers on Wednesday show 115 inmates and 20 staff have tested positive.  That compares to 57 inmates and 13 staff on Tuesday.

The union wants  inmates, correctional workers and those working at young offender facilities to be prioritized when it comes to the vaccination campaign saying it is unacceptable that that has not happened already.  Health minister Paul Merriman said Tuesday the province is monitoring the situation and encouraged all staff who are eligible to be inoculated to do so as quickly as possible.

The SGEU says there are more than 400 staff at the Regina jail with over 600 inmates.
