Liberals to deliver federal budget Monday afternoon

The federal Liberal government brings down its first budget in two years on Monday.

In November, a fall economic statement said the deficit would be at $381.6 billion by the end of this month, but many believe that number will be much higher when Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland delivers the budget

The fall economic statement released in November projected the deficit would reach $381.6 billion by the end of March 2021.

Speaking on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “We will have more to tell you next Monday about the plan we are implementing to keep Canadians safe, to create jobs for the middle class and to rebuild a clean, resilient economy and that the measures being announced will help Canadians through the COVID-19 crisis while rebuilding a stronger Canada for everyone.”

The Liberals have promised to lay out a plan that will green the economy, create a national child-care system and help displaced workers improve their skills.

One party is needed to support the budget to prevent an election from being called.
