Meili reflects on NDP report on 2020 provincial election defeat

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Ryan Meili says he’s happy to receive a report from a panel that outlines the party’s defeat in the 2020 provincial election.

The report indicates that some of the issues surrounding the fall campaign included lower support in rural parts of the province and organizational challenges.

Meili says they have some work to do to disqualify the Sask. Party government.

“I’m happy to be continuing to learn and to be transparent about the fact that is a process that’s underway,” Meili said. “I think this report is going to be a really useful tool for us as a party and the main message I take away from it is that we don’t wait until a year out (from an election), the campaign is already underway.”

Meili says there are some recommendations noted in the report that they already have chosen to do as a caucus.

“Greater focus on jobs and the economy, and this focus on taking the fight to the Sask. Party now, that’s already underway,” Meili said. “It’s good to see some of the things that we’ve already been putting in place justified or validated in that way.”

According to the report, some of the campaign’s weaknesses included a reduction in party membership and lower fundraising levels compared to what the Saskatchewan Party accomplished.
