Could Halifax’s loss be Regina’s gain?

The President and CEO of the Regina Exhibition Association Limited is hoping so,

Halifax was to be the host city for the World Women’s Hockey Championship with the event starting Thursday, but the province cancelled it because of COVID-19.  Hockey Canada has said they still want to host the tournament and have set an August date.   After hosting a successful bubble for the WHL’s Eastern Division that no delays and ran smoothly, Tim Reid thinks that plan could be dusted off, tweaked a little because of more teams that would be involved and do it again.  He says Evraz Place has shown it can do the job.

“We just finished a very complex tournament at one venue and some supporting infrastructure.” Reid said. “We showed that we can keep all involved safe, we showed how we could deliver food and beverage, how we could provide cleaning and how we could provide practice space.  We are very well positioned to do this if given the opportunity.”

Reid says the World Women’s Hockey Championship was something he had looked at approaching Hockey Canada on post-pandemic as he feels it is an event that would be a tremendous one for Regina to host, but after the news from Halifax and the success of the WHL East bubble, many in the community reached out to say let’s do it again if we can thus prompting a call to Hockey Canada.

On Saturday night, Hockey Night in Canada reported that Calgary and Edmonton are also showing interest.
