No charges will be laid against anyone after a 48-year-old man was struck by an unmarked police vehicle.
The Regina Police Service says it was recommended there should be no Criminal Code or Traffic Safety Act charges against the driver following an investigation into the incident. The driver is a RPS constable with ten years of service.
“There was consideration given to evidence that indicated the pedestrian proceeded into the path of the vehicle when it was unsafe to do so, but the pedestrian will not be charged,” reads a statement by Regina Police issued Friday. “This matter is now concluded.”
The collision happened on May 28 at 12:45 a.m. on the 3000 block of Fourth Avenue. Patrol officers and a marked police car were near the location for an unrelated call.
According to RPS, the man appeared to cross Fourth Avenue, distracted by the marked police car, and did not see the unmarked police vehicle coming towards him going eastbound on Fourth Avenue. Police say the vehicle is used for covert operations and was driven by an officer dressed in plainclothes.
“The pedestrian was not crossing in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing, when he was struck by the police vehicle,” continues the statement by RPS. “Police held the scene for investigation by a collision reconstruction expert, and gathered statements and physical evidence to inform the investigation.
The man hit by the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment and was later released.
