Crop hail damage claims in Saskatchewan down significantly so far this year

2021 is a slow year for hail claims so far this growing season in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance CEO Rodney Schoettler says crop damage hail claims are about 20 percent of the 5 year average.

He says the low number is due to persistent hot dry weather and the lack of thunderstorms.

So far, Schoettler says there have been hail storms June 5th with 100 claims near Wilkie, July 3rd around Canora and Tuesday of this week in the southwest corner.

He points out it is still early in the growing season.

Usually, there are 98 hail storms during the 120 day growing season.

He says Municipal Hail is carrying a record liability of 2.9 billion dollars in coverage this year.
