Sask. lakes will be busy this weekend as Free Fishing Weekend takes place

Saskatchewan residents are invited to hit the lakes this weekend and take part in the province’s annual Free Fishing Weekend.

The weekend is the only time of year when anyone who wants to fish can do so without a license.

Provincial Sport Fishing Specialist Murray Koob says the weekend is usually pretty busy.

“Our hope is that we attract a lot more people to the sport of fishing,” said Koob. “It’s popular in the sense that we get a lot of inquiries every year, as to when the event is going to be held. Traditionally, we always like to have it on that second weekend of July.”

Koob says fishing provides the perfect outdoor experience, adding the weekend couldn’t come at a better time.

“Especially with what we’ve been through recently with the Covid pandemic, it’s a wonderful opportunity for people to get out and get some fresh air, and to enjoy the sport of fishing, and get a better appreciation for environment and just what fishing is in general.”

Koob encourages anyone who hasn’t gone fishing before to ensure they with someone who has experience.

He adds despite licenses not being needed; every other fishing regulation will still be in effect.
