Caronport man to serve five years in prison after 2020 accident that killed two

A 45-year old Caronport man has received his sentence after pleading guilty to drinking and driving related charges that took the lives of two teenagers from Sherwood Park, Alberta and seriously injured another

In September of 2020, Christopher Rempel was behind the wheel of a truck that hit a SUV on a highway near the Alberta community.. Not only was he in the wrong lane and driving without headlights on at the time of the late evening accident, but he was also two times over the legal limit.

Rempel will spend the next five years in prison.

That doesn’t sit well with the mother of one of the victims. Maria Popiwchak, told reporters outside the courtroom in Fort Saskatchewan that Rempel will be eligible for day parole in about 14 months and questions if that seems right after he took two young lives and changed a third forever.
