UPDATE: Escaped prisoner found east of Esterhazy

After being on the run for roughly 12 hours, Jason Mitton was been located and arrested in a rural area several kilometres east of Esterhazy on Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, the 28-year-old man — wearing only light grey underwear — escaped police custody while at the Esterhazy Hospital.

In a release, RCMP say the man is known to break into farm yards, and are asking people in the area to secure all buildings and vehicles.

Mitton was originally arrested by Esterhazy RCMP Monday, and now faces five charges:

  • mischief under $5000,
  • assault on peace officer,
  • attempt to escape lawful custody,
  • assault, and
  • fail to comply with undertaking.

Esterhazy is about 50 minutes southeast of Melville.

Mitton will appear in provincial court in Broadview on Wednesday.
