An RCMP sergeant with the Waskesiu detachment has been charged with possession of a restricted firearm.

Police say the sergeant let his firearms license expire for a .22 caliber handgun, that was not related to his job.

Sergeant Rene Giroux, has surrendered the pistol, according to police.

Giroux, who remains on active duty, is set to appear in court on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation in early September.
