The battle for backup QB will likely go right to the end

With the 2021 CFL season just over a week away for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, there are tough decisions that have to be made when it comes to who makes the roster and who doesn’t.

One position where that is the case is who will be serving as Cody Fajardo’s backup.   Isaac Harker, Paxton Lynch, Mason Fine and Tom Flacco have all had solid camps, but head coach Craig Dickenson has no clue at this time as to what decision they will go.

“We are probably going to keep three. It’s going to be a tough decision that we make.  All of those quarterbacks are doing a nice job and making our decision tough,” Dickenson said. “Ultimately, Jeremy (GM Jeremy O’Day) will decide who we keep and who we don’t, but all four guys have shown themselves well.

Dickenson says the two and three spots are up for grabs, but Isaac Harker may have a leg up on the competition because of his experience but that doesn’t mean anything as the final days of camp approach.

One of the toughest things for Dickenson is the fact none of his quarterbacks have taken a hit during camp which will change come August 6th when the Riders take on B.C in the season opener.

“It’s made it hard.  The only game film you have is college film or previous pro experience.” Dickenson said. “We don’t even know if a guy will bounce back if he gets sacked.  It’s a different year, but moving forward I hope we can have at least one pre-season game because that game gives rookies a chance to make the team if they can show us what they can do in a pre-season game.”
