On the fifth anniversary of his death, the family of Colten Boushie repeated calls for a public inquiry into the incident leading to his death.

Speaking in Saskatoon, Boushie’s mother Debbie Baptiste said answers are needed five years later and that her son was a victim and not a criminal.

The 22-year-old Boushie died Aug. 9, 2016, after a vehicle he was riding in went onto a farm near Biggar.

The property’s owner, Gerald Stanley, testified at trial that his gun accidentally went off, shooting Boushie in the head. A jury acquitted him of second-degree murder.

Baptiste said she remembers her son as a kindhearted, loving young man who deserved a life and had his dreams cut short.
