Despite bye week Rams face UBC Saturday with all the momentum

The 1-1 U of R Rams come into a match up with the winless UBC Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon well rested after a bye week.

However, the feel is more one of excitement and momentum after a huge win the week before over the Calgary Dinos, the first time a Rams team has ever defeated a number one ranked team in the U Sports poll.

The Rams also broke into the U Sports top ten themselves with the win, and are now seventh, after losses by Guelph and McMaster.

Interim Coach Mark McConkey, told Mitchell Blair earlier this week, that Canada West is wide open for anyone to take right now.

“That’s one of the things we’ve been preaching to our guys from day one,” he said. “It’s Canada West, anyone can win, in 2019 we lost four of our games by less than four points and in 2016 we won most by just over two points, it’s Canada West every team is a good team and every team is well coached,” he said.

With last week off McConkey knows that comes with both positives and negatives.

“It’s a bit of both, obviously I think we needed the bye week to get healthy, we had a lot of injuries going into that Calgary game,” McConkey said. “On the other side you want to keep that momentum going, I think we got the best of both, we still have that momentum going, we had some really good practices this week.”

The Rams are 18-15 all time against UBC, however the last time these teams met in October of 2019, the Thunderbirds came out on top 33-28.

Kickoff is 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon from Mosaic Stadium.
