Huskies win Canada West’s battle of Saskatchewan

The University of Regina Rams are now 1-3 on the season after dropping a 27-17 decision to their provincial rivals, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon Saturday afternoon.

The two teams played the game with the wind gusting at 60 kilometers an hour and it did have an impact on the game as both teams struggled offensively when trying to move the ball into the wind.

The Huskies, who got three touchdown passes from Regina’s Mason Nyhus.  won the coin toss at the start of the game and made sure they would have the wind at their back in the fourth quarter.  That plan worked the way the U of S wanted it to as two short punts midway through the quarter resulted in 10 points for them to break a 17-17 tie.

The Rams went into the game without their regular quarterback Josh Donnelly as he was out due to injury.  That meant backup Sawyer Buettner started, but he had to leave the game in the second half due to a concussion which meant third stringer Bryden O’Flaherty had to take over.

He threw a touchdown pass to D’Sean Mimbs while defensive back Jackson Sombach had the other touchdown when he scooped up a blocked punt and took into the endzone.

The result leaves the Huskies now tied with Manitoba for first in Canada West as both teams are 3-1 after Manitoba suffered their first loss of the year in UBC.  The Rams are 1-3 and will take on the University of Alberta next Saturday in Edmonton in what will be a must-win game if the team hopes to make the playoffs.  The Golden Bears are 1-2 going into a game Sunday against 1-2 Calgary.
