With the winter temperatures set to roll in Regina, the FSIN says something has to be done for the individuals at Camp Marjorie right now.

They are working alongside with the Regina Treaty Status Indian Services to provide support for the camp residents.

Regina Treaty Status Indian Services Executive Director Erica Beaudin says some indoor help should be on the way in the near future. She noted that they will be onsite at the camp on Monday working to provide assistance for residents to seek application for an interim indoor facility. She is hoping that the interim facility would be ready within the next week, at this time she couldn’t provide the location.

The FSIN is calling on the provincial government to reverse the changes of the Saskatchewan Income Support Program including the amount that is provided to clients and how they are paid out. They noted it’s a major concern since it has left many applicants behind in paying their rent and utilities and has forced many individuals evicted and becoming homeless. The FSIN is calling on the provincial government to conduct an internal review of the program and make the necessary changes that are needed to be made.

Both the FSIN and the Regina Treaty Status Indian Services saluted the efforts of the City of Regina to address the housing problems within the city that has been caused by the switch to the SIS program from the Saskatchewan Assistance Program. Beaudin says they are looking forward to working with organizations like the City of Regina, Regina Police, Regina Fire Department, Red Cross, Social Services and other organizations to find possible solutions for those who have been affected with the switch to the SIS program.
