Popular Saskatchewan doctor dies of COVID-19 in an Ontario ICU

A doctor who could be seen patrolling hospital hallways in Regina, Fort Qu’Appelle and Moose Jaw has died from COVID-19.

Youseef Al-Begamy was one of several patients transferred to Ontario to relieve the pressure on Saskatchewan intensive care units. He was sent out about two weeks ago.

The Islamic Association of Saskatchewan went to their Facebook page to praise Al-Begamy as a well-loved doctor in the centers where he worked.

Al-Begamy is the third Saskatchewan patient who was sent to Ontario who has died. The province says 18 patients are still in Ontario while six have been brought back to the province

Word of the death hit the Saskatchewan Legislature on Monday with Health Minister Paul Merriman saying it is tragic when anyone suffers a loss while adding this should serve as a reminder for all to get vaccinated. NDP leader Ryan Meili said it must be extremely hard on families to have someone be flown halfway across the country to be treated and not come back.
