Man with machete charged after failing to steal bike

A man has been charged after he tried to steal a bike with a machete earlier today.

Regina Police were dispatched to a residence on Dewdney Avenue for a report of a home invasion.

A female was in the residents when 29-year-old John Edward Demarais attempted to steal a bike, armed with a machete.

A male arrived to assist the victim, but Demarais locked him outside the house. Once the outside male entered the house, Demarais pointed the bladed weapon at the male. He then tried to leave the house with the bicycle but was unsuccessful and fled.

Police arrived to see him enter a taxicab, with the cab driving away. Demarais then exited the cab and fled on foot, where he was pursued by a canine and bitten, leading to him being arrested.

Demarais is charged with possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking (fentanyl), breaking and entering with intent, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon.

The accused made his first appearance on these charges in Provincial Court this afternoon.
