City happy with clean-up after this week’s blizzard

Regina received nearly 10 centimetres of snow coupled with extreme 90 km wind gusts and major drifting throughout the community. The City’s storm response was guided by the new Winter Maintenance Policy.

The new policy means more streets are plowed more quickly, making it easier to commute. Five hundred seventy three kilometres of roads are to be plowed within 60 hours from the end of a snow event. As of today, we have completed all Category 1 roads. 80 per cent of Category 2 and 3 roads are plowed and expected to be complete by the end of the day. During the storm, the City applied 1,095 tonnes of various sand/salt mixes to help reduce slippery sections at major intersections.

All transit routes have been plowed and crews are clearing snow from the 1,400 transit stops making transit more accessible. In addition, 160 km of sidewalks at and near transit stops, and 127 km of sidewalks around City facilities and adjacent to parks are being cleared.

Over the weekend, crews will remove snow ridges from both sides of school loading zones to help make school drop offs and pickups safer and easier. Crews will also begin to address perimeter areas of the city, including some residential streets adjacent to open areas, due to the large snow accumulations.

Regina’s new Sidewalk Snow Clearing bylaw does not come into effect until January 1, 2022. However, it’s important for all property owners to keep their sidewalks free of snow and ice at all times. Clearing sidewalks helps everyone in our community travel safely in all seasons, whether on foot, using a mobility device, or pushing a stroller.
