Canada joins international sustainable food production coalition

Canada has joined an international sustainable agriculture production and food system coalition.

Federal agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau says Canada has joined the Sustainable Productivity Growth for Food Security and Resource Conservation coalition to help deal with climate change.

The group comes out of the United Nations Food systems summit last September and includes more than 15 countries and dozens of academic organizations led by the U.S.

The coalition will give Canada an international platform to push for research, innovations and technologies and improve productivity growth in Canada’s farming sector.

Bibeau says Canadian farmers have doubled the value of production while stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions over the past two decades.

She says efforts must continue to reduce emissions given the pressing climate and environmental challenges at hand.
