Regina city council will be holding a special meeting on Friday afternoon in response to the Saskatchewan Government changing their COVID-19 public health order.
Council will be deciding whether they want to keep their proof of vaccination and mandatory masking mandates in place or lift them.
Mayor Sandra Masters said that the meeting responded to the provincial government’s announcement earlier this week.
“In response to the province signally that they will be lifting the public health order,” she said. “We do have proof of vaccination clearly in place in our city facilities, and we will be discussing what to do in response to the public health order.”
The provincial government has already announced that it would be lifting its proof of vaccination requirements on February 14 and mandatory indoor masking on March 1.
Earlier this week, Saskatoon’s city council voted to keep mandatory masking in city facilities and on transit but will be lifting proof of vaccination.
Masters said other cities, like Saskatoon, will be weighed into the council’s decision.
“They would have done exactly the same thing, talk to their deputy chief medical health officer, weighed the pros and cons relative to liabilities,” she said. “They made a decision to follow suit, keeping maks in place.”
The Regina city council meeting will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
