A new study from SaskWheat says farmers have received huge benefits from crop research.
Chair Brett Halstead says a study of producer-led wheat breeding investments over the last 27 years shows a big return on investment.
He says the return is almost 33 dollars for every dollar invested in wheat breeding over the last 27 years.
Halstead says Saskatchewan farmers pay one dollar a ton through a mandatory but refundable producer levy on grain sold.
SaskWheat is expecting about 8 million dollars this year for research and promotion, down about 50 percent due to last year’s drought.
