A new stamp is out featuring a longtime Indigenous chief in southern Saskatchewan.
Yesterday in Fort Qu’Appelle, Canada Post unveiled a stamp for Chief Marie-Anne Day Walker-Pelletier, the former chief of the Okanese First Nation near Fort Qu’Appelle.
Part of a delegation that went to the Vatican earlier this year to speak with Pope Francis about the residential school system, Day Walker-Pelletier has long held the reputation of being a champion for improving the lives of women and children.
Day Walker-Pelletier led numerous projects related to education, wellness and social reform during her stint as chief from 1981-2020.
Stamps of her and other Indigenous leaders will be released nationwide June 21st on National Indigenous People’s Day.
