Thunder set to open playoffs against Rifles

The snow has arrived and so has playoff football for the Regina Thunder.

On Sunday, they will welcome the Winnipeg Rifles in one of the PFC’s semi-finals.

This season the two teams met in a pair of close games with Regina pulling a victory on both occasions, but games were decided within one score.

For the second straight season, the Thunder finished on top of the PFC’s standings with a perfect 8-0 record. They are trying to redeem themselves from last season where they advanced to the league finals before bowing out to the Saskatoon Hilltops.

Winnipeg finished the year 4-4, as they should make the 1 vs 4 in the PFC playoffs at little bit more competitive than it has been in years past.

The Thunder’s aerial attack may be limited due to the heavy winds that’s accompanied with snow on Sunday. Thunder QB Carter Shewchuk led the PFC in passing, with receiver Rylan Sokul finishing first in receiving, Isaac Foord finished third while Isaiah Woodley was sixth.

Running back Ryland Leichert should be busy today, he finished off third in the league with 724 yards rushing this season.

Kickoff today at Leibel Field is 1:00.

The other semi-final in the PFC will see the Saskatoon Hilltops take on the Edmonton Huskies. The winners of today’s semi-finals will meet next week in the league final.
