With the calendar now flipping over to November, even with the temperatures dropping, the provincial high school football championships are heating up with action taking place throughout Saskatchewan, with championship Saturday coming up next weekend.
In the 5A bracket, the Greenall Griffins from Balgonie will take on Weyburn Eagles in one of the provincial semi-finals. The winner will of the southside battle will meet the winner of the Saskatoon matchup between Bishop Mahoney and Aden Bowman next Friday in Regina at Leibel Field.
Head coach for the Griffins, Cory Lechner was a guest on the SportsCage with Michael Ball on Thursday.
Lechner says that his team this season has gotten younger.
“We had 28 Grade 12’s last year and this we only have nine.”
The Griffins added that with a young team this season, there will be heavy expectations down the road for the program.
Greenall and Weyburn will meet for the second straight season with the Eagles earning a dominating win in 2021.
Lechner’s expectation for Weyburn is that they will be a very physical team and hasn’t seen too many weaknesses ahead of their game.
In order for the Griffins to pick up a victory on Saturday, Lechner feels that they will have to tackle well. He is also hopeful that weather won’t be a factor so they can utilize their passing game.
There will also be playoff games on this weekend in nine man, as well in both 1A and 2A six man football.
