It’s super cold and roads are incredibly icy here in Saskatchewan, and the conditions are a challenge for even the best drivers out there.

Christine Niemczyk said CAA Saskatchewan is fielding a high volume of calls related to vehicles needing a boost or a tow.

“The number of calls that we’re counting within the last 24 hours in Regina and area is a minimum of 200 to 250 calls, and we still have some calls waiting so thank you for your patience,” said Niemczyk.

She said the Saskatoon area had about 150 calls in the same period between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon, and provincially they’ve received a total of 700 calls, and climbing.

Niemczyk said it’s important to stay warm while waiting for roadside assistance, and to take care of your vehicle, and if you can, look at carpooling.

Finding ways of staying warm is of critical importance once you are in that situation.

“Stay in your vehicle,” she said. “It does provide temporary shelter until help can reach you. Be in a mall, home, office..”

She said that at CAA, they often say to plug in at -15 or colder.

But Niemczyk also says to make sure your block heater cord is not frayed and that your power source is operational.
