Estevan gearing up to host two provincial curling events

The Energy City will turn into the “Curling City” over the next couple of weeks in Saskatchewan. Estevan will be the host for a pair of provincial curling tournaments, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the Tankard.

Affinity Place will be the site for the Viterra Saskatchewan Scotties from Jan.25-29. With the Sasktel Men’s Tankard taking place from February 1-5.

Steve Turner from Curl Sask joined the 620 CKRM Morning Show last week with Gloria Evans and Cody Glydon to discuss the two events.

The winners of the Scotties will represent Saskatchewan in Kamloops, B.C. in February. The Tankard champions will advance to London, Ontario to compete in the Brier.

Turner said with Estevan’s history of hosting events in the past, it was an easy decision to award the city the two events.

“When they came to us and pitched hosting both of these together, it was very much a no brainer for us.”

An attractive piece of the bid from Estevan is the host site, Affinity Place. Turner said he was excited by their previews of the venue.

“We’ve been able to do a couple of recent site tours just as we coordinate everything coming and we’re so excited to be there.”

Volunteers play a huge role in order for events like the Scotties and Tankard to take place. According to Turner there will be over 100 volunteers helping out to make sure the curling events are a success.

The Scotties and Tankard should both be competitive with each event featuring with Penny Barker back to defend her Scotties title and Colton Flasch looking to repeat as champions.
