During his playing days, former Saskatchewan Roughrider Al Ford was known as Mr. Versatility since he played fullback, wide receiver and punter. His grandson Jaxon is beginning to form his versatile path in the sporting world with a heavy influence from his grandfather.
On Thursday, the University of Regina Rams defensive back joined Michael Ball as a guest on the SportsCage.
Along with his playing career, Jaxon’s grandpa had a lengthy career on the administrative side of the sport. He was the general manager for the Roughriders from 1989-99, which included a Grey Cup championship in his first season.
After beginning his studies in Kinesiology, the Rams defensive back said he shifted his interest to business, particularly sports. With about a year and a half remaining until he graduates, Jaxon is not sure what occupation he will work towards but noted his grandfather influenced him to pursue a career dealing with the business side of sports.
During his time at the University of Regina, Ford has earned Academic All-Canadian on multiple occasions.
Growing up in the area, Ford said he participated in many different sports, but his love for football dates back to playing flag football when he was eight.
The dream of playing as a professional is still alive, he is eligible to be selected in the CFL Draft this May.
Last season the defensive back had 34 tackles, an interception, 3.5 tackles for losses, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
In 2017, the defensive back helped the Campbell Tartans win a provincial 4A title. Ford also won a gold medal with Team Canada at the World U19 2018 IFAF U19 World Championship in Mexico.
Jaxon’s grandfather was a contributor for the Roughriders on all three sides of the ball the younger Ford thinks he can contribute on the defensive and special teams sides of the game.
“I think I’m a physical, fast, smart player.”
Jaxon thinks like his grandfather, he can be a weapon on the field.
“I think being versatile is important because I think if you can have a guy that can defence and specials, that’s very valuable. ”
Over the years, his grandfather has passed down some advice. Jaxon says one piece of advice he received was to be confident and not to worry about making mistakes.
Versatility might be a unique trait, but it’s proving to be a common one with the Ford family.
