NFU promotes Community Land Trusts to avoid farmland crisis

The National Farmers Union says Canada is facing a farmland crisis.

The NFU is encouraging farmers to donate land to Community Land Trusts to provide a way for farmland access to a new generation.

The NFU describes land trusts as non-profit corporations created to acquire and hold land for the benefit of a community.

The NFU sees potential for Canadian land trusts to secure and preserve farmland and create avenues for farmland succession.

The NFU says a petition is underway, calling for changes to the Canadian tax code to allow landowners to donate to community land trusts on the same basis as land donations to ecological land reserves.

The NFU is asking for people to sign the petition by the end of the month deadline to help address a farmland crisis.
