Provincial Budget to be released this afternoon

The Government of Saskatchewan will be presenting its 2023-2024 budget later today.

Finance Minister Donna Harpauer says that people can expect a budget that reflects that the province is still very strong with its finances.

Some of the big questions to be answered today include health care spending.  The provincial government has signed on to the new health accord, so there should be more money for health care.

How that money will be spent is noteworthy as well, as hospitals are dealing with chronic staff shortages, not to mention a shortage of family doctors.

Mental Health spending should be increasing, in part because of an increase of federal dollars.

The Sask Party Government’s 2022-2023 budget turning from a 500 million dollar deficit, to a 1 billion dollar surplus thanks to commodities and higher tax revenue.  With revenue from commodities still high, we should get a sense of how the government plans to use that money if there is a surplus in Budget 2023-2024.

The Finance Minister will rise in the Legislature just after 2 o’clock this afternoon to read the budget speech.
