Trade deal talks between Canada and United Kingdom progressing well: Canadian High Commissioner

Negotiations between Canada and the United Kingdom on a new trade deal are going well.

That’s according to the Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Ralph Goodale, who says a new deal is needed after the U.K. separated from the European Union in 2020.

“Getting good access for things like canola, beef, sweet corn and pork…those are priorities and it’s tough bargaining but agriculture is always important in trade negotiations.” Goodale said.

He expects a trade deal should be agreed upon around March or April of 2024.

“It looks like it’s on time and on track to be finished by about that time,” Goodale added.

He says there have been 5 rounds of negotiating between the two sides, rotating between Ottawa and London for each round of talks. The 6th meeting is set for June in Ottawa.

“They’re making progress every time, so I’m hopeful that it’ll come out right at the end and we’ll keep working at it.”
