Province Forcing Oil and Gas Drillers to Pay Up

The provincial government is adding some teeth to legislation, to make sure landowners get paid for allowing their land to be used for oil drilling, and exploration.

The Ministry of Energy and Resources and the Surface Rights Board of Arbitration will have more power to make sure these fees are paid to landowners.

“Maintaining strong relationships between industry and landowners is key to a healthy resource sector,” Energy and Resources Minister Jim Reiter said. “Our government is committed to finding a balance that both protects landowners and allows our businesses to continue and thrive.”

Failure to pay up could mean the oil company loses its license.

The new rules will go into effect January 1st, 2024.
