As the temperatures are trending down and snow is arriving, the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency is reminding folks to ensure ice is thick enough to walk, drive, or have a snowmobile on.
The WSA says ice thickness can be unpredictable, not freeze in a uniform manner, and the strength can vary from one place to another.
Avoid ice that looks slushy, has thawed then froze again, near moving water, is layered as a result of sudden temperature changes, or has structures in it such as pressure ridges.
As a guideline, you need at least 4-inches of ice to walk on, 8-inches for a snowmobile or ATV, 12-inches for a car or light truck, and more than 12 inches for a heavy truck.
