Two youths have been charged after Regina police responded to reports of two weapons calls at two elementary schools in North Regina.
At 2:00 p.m. on December 14, School Resource Officers were called to a school in the 1900 block of 2nd Avenue North for a report of a bear spray incident involving a 12-year-old female victim.
The victim was in the playground area when she was approached by two female youth suspects who sprayed her before fleeing the scene.
The suspects were seen a short time later at a school in the 200 block of Broad Street. Witnesses told police that one of the suspects had a firearm.
When officers arrived at the school, the suspects fled. A short foot pursuit involving SROs, Patrol and the Canine Unit took place, and the two were taken into custody.
Due to the serious nature of the call for service and the presence of weapons, a police dog was used in the arrest. One of the suspects was treated for a dog bite injury.
The schools involved were briefly put into “Secure-the-Building” mode during the incident.
A 12-year-old female was charged with assault with a weapon and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, and a 13-year-old is charged with obstructing a peace officer and failure to comply with conditions of a release order.
Both are set to make their first court appearances in Regina Youth Provincial Court in 2024.
