Roughriders announce 2024 Coaching Staff

Saskatchewan Roughriders Head Coach Corey Mace has assembled his staff for the upcoming season.

Last month, it was announced the team had hired Marc Mueller as the team’s offensive coordinator and retained Kent Magueri as the special teams coordinator.

On Monday, the full staff was announced.

Running Backs Coach- Anthony Vitale

Vitale is the lone positional coach to be retained by Mace from the previous staff. Last season, Vitale was the offensive line coach for Saskatchewan. Prior to joining the Roughriders, he was the offensive line coach in Edmonton for one season. Vitale also spent time at Eastern New Mexico State as the team’s offensive line and offensive coordinator. He was also the offensive line coach at Delaware State University.

Wide Receivers Coach- Marquay McDaniel

Former CFL receiver McDaniel joins the Roughriders as the team’s receivers coach. McDaniel began his coaching career as a receivers coach in 2018 with McMaster University. He then moved into the professional ranks, as the Montreal Alouettes receivers coach in 2019. McDaniel returned to Calgary, where he spent six years as a player, to become the team’s receivers coach (2020-22). The 39-year-old was not retained for the 2023 season. As a player, McDaniel had over 7,000 career receiving yards with Calgary and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, including three seasons over 1,000 receiving yards.

Offensive Line Coach- Edwin Harrison

Harrison joins the Roughriders after spending the last two seasons as the Toronto Argonauts running backs coach and run game coordinator. Under the 39-year-old’s tutelage, the Argonauts gained 2,046 yards on the ground including A.J. Ouellette who surpassed the 1,000 yard mark. As a player, Harrison spent six seasons in Calgary (2010-15). He won two Grey Cups, one as a player (2014) and one as a coach (2022).

Defensive Backs & Passing Game Coordinator- Josh Bell

Bell is another coach who joins Mace after spending time in Toronto. The 39-year-old originally began his coaching career in 2018 with the Calgary Stampeders. He would remain there before joining the Argonauts in 2021, where he coached the defensive backs over the last three seasons. As a player, Bell was with the BC Lions for two seasons (2012-13) before heading to Calgary (2014-17), where he finished his playing career. The former Baylor Bear was a Super Bowl Champion with Green Bay (2010) and won a Grey Cup as a player (2014) and another on as a coach (2022).

Defensive Line Coach- Philip Daniels

Daniels comes to Saskatchewan with both playing and coaching experience from the NFL. He was the Assistant Defensive Line coach with the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons (2016-18) before he was promoted to Defensive Line Coach (2019). The 50-year-old was apart of the Eagles Super Bowl team in 2017. This past year, Daniels was the Defensive Line Coach for the Houston Gamblers of the USFL during the 2023 season. During his playing career, Daniels played over 200 games with Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears. He is also the father of Argonaut receiver DaVaris Daniels.

Linebackers Coach and Run Game Coordinator- J.C. Sherritt

Former Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year Sherritt returns to the CFL after spending the last four years coaching in the NCAA. Last year, Sherritt was a Defensive Analyst at Washington State after spending a season with Auburn. From 2020-21, the 35-year-old was with the defensive coordinator at Cal Poly. The former Elks linebacker began his coaching career in Calgary (2019) as the team’s linebacker. On the field, Sherritt won a Grey Cup with Edmonton (2015).

Defensive Assistant- Jordan Linnen

Linnen will move to the defensive side of the ball after he spent the last two years in Edmonton as the Elks Running Backs Coach. Before that he was with Simon Fraser University (2018-20) as the team’s Defensive Backs Coach and recruiting coordinator. The Surrey, B.C. native spent time with the Montreal Alouettes and B.C. Lions as a player.

Special Teams Assistant- Jeff Higgins

Higgins joins the Roughriders after spending time with the Orlando Predators. In 2022 he was the Head Coach after serving as the strength and conditioning coach, special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach (2019-21). He was the guest coach at four CFL camps (2016-19).
