Resolution to increase beef checkoff passed at SCA AGM

A resolution to increase the provincial portion of the beef checkoff was passed on Wednesday at the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) annual general meeting in Regina.

The resolution called for a $1.50 per head increase in the checkoff starting April 1st, 2025.  The new total would be $3.50 with the money used to fund research, new technologies, open additional export markets and inform consumers on the value of beef.

SCA CEO Grant McLellan says the passed resolution will now go to the Board for approval. The next regular meeting of the Board is in mid-February.

The provincial beef checkoff has rarely changed over the years. Since 1987, when the checkoff was established at $1.00 per head, it only changed once in 2012.

Like some in attendance at the AGM, McLellan expects to hear differing opinions from producers, who weren’t at the AGM, about the increase to the checkoff.
