Pats edge Rebels in a Sunday Shootout

The Regina Pats picked up much needed win on Sunday, outlasting the Red Deer Rebels to earn a 7-6 shootout victory.

Tye Spencer (2G-1A) and Tye Gibson (0G-3A) led the Pats offensively with three points each. For Gibson, Sunday marked his 200th career game in the WHL.

Also scoring for the Pats in the win was Tanner Howe, Zach Moore, Sam Oremba, Braxton Whitehead and Zackary Shantz. Both Howe and Moore snapped five-game goalless droughts, while Shantz scored his first goal in nine games.

In the shootout, Whitehead and Howe scored for Regina, securing the victory.

Ewan Huet backstopped the Pats to the win making 23 saves.

Sunday’s contest was a back and forth affair, with five lead changes during the game. In the third period, the Pats found themselves down by 5-3, before answering back with three goals before Red Deer sent the game into overtime.

Regina will close the season series against the Rebels with a 2-1-0-1 record, with all four matchups decided by a goal with three of them decided in a shootout.

With the win, the Pats remain seven points back of a playoff spot as Calgary earned a win on Sunday over Edmonton. This week, Regina will hit the road for a two-game trip in Alberta. On Tuesday, they’re in Medicine Hat, followed up by a Wednesday night clash in Calgary against the Hitmen.
