Riders extend Canadian DB Onyeka

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have inked Canadian defensive back Godfrey Onyeka to a one-year contract extension.

Onyeka, standing at 6’2 and weighing 200 pounds, returned from a torn pectoral muscle suffered during last year’s preseason. Despite the setback, he returned to the field, contributing in four games to conclude the campaign.

Hailing from Brampton, Ontario, Onyeka first joined the Riders in 2021.

Over the 2021 and 2022 seasons, he participated in 11 regular-season matchups and the 2021 West Final. He recorded 26 defensive tackles and nine special teams tackles during this time.

Notably, fans arriving early at Mosaic Stadium on game days may recognize Onyeka engaging in pre-game catch sessions with supporters in the stands.

The 29-year-old was chosen in the second round (10th overall) by Edmonton in the 2018 CFL Draft. During his tenure with the Elks, he appeared in 27 games across two seasons, amassing five defensive tackles and 13 special teams tackles.
