Teachers Continue Job Action Across the Province

Strike action continues across the province this week – with some form of job action planned for all 5 days.

Teachers will not come to the bargaining table unless the provincial government agrees to bargain over “class size, and class complexity”. So far, the Sask Party Government has refused to give its negotiators that mandate. Instead, the government is pushing funds to the school divisions so they can work out the best way to tackle the issue on a division by division level.

The STF has been announcing what action its members will be taking 48 hours in advance, as is the law.

Today there will be a province wide ban on extra-curricular activities. That means teachers will not take part in things like sports, drama, music, band, science clubs, intramurals, rehearsals, student leadership activities, planning for graduation celebrations, book fairs, and other clubs and activities. All extracurricular activities that take place before school, during lunch hour, after school and in the evening are included.

Additionally today – lunch-hour supervision will also be absent at schools in the Regina Public, Christ the Teacher Catholic, Île à la Crosse, Prairie Valley, and Sun West school divisions.

Friday marks a one-day withdrawal of noon-hour supervision in specific divisions. Schools affected include those in the Good Spirit, Holy Family Catholic, Horizon, Saskatchewan Rivers Public, Prince Albert Catholic school divisions, and all institutions under the Conseil des écoles fransaskoises.

Additionally, extracurricular activities’ supervision will be withdrawn in various other divisions, including Île à la Crosse, Prairie Valley, Good Spirit, Living Sky, Light of Christ Catholic school divisions, Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre campuses, and Sakewew High School in North Battleford.
